State probate courts can usually only control real estate within that state. Some states will accept certified copies of another state’s probate orders, but other states require a completely separate probate process. I.e. it is sometimes necessary to file a probate application in every state where the deceased person owned real estate. A good estate planning attorney can often avoid this result through proper planning during life.
